Lycopene is a type of organic pigment called a carotenoid. It is related to beta-carotene, it is found in red carrots, watermelons, grapefruits, papayas and sweet red peppers their pink/red color. It is thought to be good for bone health and, as a potent antioxidant, may help protect against heart disease and certain types of cancer.
The antioxidant properties help balance free radical activity in the body and in doing so, may reduce the risk of certain diseases. In a clinical study, lycopene was shown to affect bone metabolism and contributed to prevent bone loss in postmenopausal women.
Research has shown that higher lycopene levels strongly correlate (have a mutual relationship) with a reduced risk for prostate cancer For example, a meta-analysis (a merging of findings from many studies) showed that participants who reported higher lycopene intake and had higher blood levels of lycopene were at lower risk of prostate cancer.
Human epidemiological evidence indicates that diets high in tomatoes may reduce the risk of cervical, colon, esophageal, oral, rectal, prostate, and stomach cancer.
More evidence is emerging that supports lycopene's role in keeping blood vessels healthy. Interestingly, this improvement was only seen in people with cardiovascular disease. Lycopene has been studied for its neuroprotective effects; potential mechanisms include inhibition of oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and neuronal apoptosis, as well as restoration of mitochondrial dysfunction.
