CoQ10 – Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is an endogenously produced compound present in human cells (9,11).
It plays a fundamental role in mitochondrial energy metabolism as a key component of the electron transport chain, where it supports the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) (11,14). Beyond its role in bioenergetics, CoQ10 functions as a potent antioxidant, protecting cellular structures from oxidative stress and free radical–induced damage (8,9).
Its antioxidant activity contributes to cardiovascular health (2,15), supports healthy aging processes (9) and enhances immune function.
Mechanisms of Action and Biological Effects
CoQ10 acts as a coenzyme in oxidative phosphorylation, ensuring efficient mitochondrial ATP generation. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties contribute to several clinically relevant physiological benefits (15), including:
